Pope on Indian Saint (File)
International News: On the morning of April 21, the global Christian community was struck with sorrow as Pope Francis passed away at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, Vatican City. He was 88 years old and had been facing health issues in recent days. Despite signs of recovery, his sudden passing just a day after Easter sent shockwaves across the world. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, confirmed the news around 9:45 AM. Born in Argentina as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis rose to become a symbol of humility and human dignity.
Known for his inclusive approach to faith and humanity, Pope Francis made headlines in December 2024 when he praised Indian spiritual leader Sree Narayana Guru. Speaking at an interfaith gathering in Vatican City commemorating the centenary of the Guru’s All-Religion Conference, the Pope highlighted Guru’s message of global unity. At a time when the world is grappling with increasing intolerance, the Pope described Narayana Guru’s vision as deeply relevant and transformative.
Pope Francis often emphasized that straying from true religious teachings is one of the root causes of today’s conflicts. In his speech, he recalled how Sree Narayana Guru advocated a world beyond divisions—one where every human being is part of the same family, regardless of race, religion, or culture. The Pope lamented that despite such wisdom, discrimination still exists in many forms across the globe. He urged the world to revisit the essence of spiritual teachings to find peace and mutual respect.
Born in 1856 in Chempazhanthi, a village in Kerala, Sree Narayana Guru was a philosopher, poet, and social reformer who challenged the rigid caste hierarchy of his time. Belonging to the Ezhava community, which was marginalized under traditional norms, Guru rose to become a beacon of equality. He promoted Advaita Vedanta and coined the slogan: “One caste, one religion, one God for mankind.” He also founded the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP) and authored several spiritual texts like Daiva Dasakam and Advaita Deepika.
Pope Francis’ passing marks the conclusion of a significant chapter in religious history. His efforts to connect diverse communities, honor global spiritual leaders, and promote peace through dialogue will continue to inspire generations. His recognition of Sree Narayana Guru not only honored India’s spiritual heritage but also underscored the Pope’s vision of universal brotherhood. As the world mourns his loss, his ideals live on—urging us toward compassion, unity, and justice.
